Why dive in the Cenotes
The Cenotes are very unique, it´s main attractions are first the access, and you have to drive in the Mayan Jungle to find them so it is quite different than diving off a boat, this means no waves (if you suffer seasickness forget about it here!!).
The visibility is in the top 3 clearest in the entire planet; under the ice we can find up to 1000ft of straight line visibility but you may agreed that it is too cold to even try!!
The Cenotes have a straight line visibility of up to 800ft and it is way much more comfortable both above and under compare to under the ice let´s say in Russia.
So no waves and easy access………..now imagine a dry cave and it´s amazing formations, usually when you visit a cave you end up muddy sweaty and dirty right? Well now flood the cave and dive through it……..all the way up to the ceilings anywhere you want as close as you want. All this formations are very ancient due to their very slow growth process.

Add fossils, yes marine fossils on the surrounding walls that showed that once upon a time this was under the bottom of the ocean, corals and some shells showing the past of the peninsula. Unusual phenomenons underwater since the sites are flooded with 2 and sometimes more different types of water.
Fresh on top a lay of brackish and then salt producing a thermo cline and a halocline, this one having a nice effect on your view. Special sites also keep prove of ancient civilization like the Maya and a very special site holds prove of “the people before the last Ice Era”. Unique and endemic life and the privilege to dive fresh water since areas of our planet today have none of this precious liquid; and amazing and peaceful sunlight entrances. This are few reasons why Cenote diving is a MUST on your next visit to Akumal.
Here some brief descriptions of the Cenotes of the Mayan Riviera.
