Ocean Dives

Our ocean dive tours begin at the staging area located at The Akumal Dive Shop.

There you will be set up with all the necessary equipment for your dive. We use aluminum 80 cu. ft. tanks filled to 3000 psi. After checking all the equipment we move to the 28′ open panga boats. We normally limit our dives to a maximum of eight plus our Divemaster and captain. Special arrangements can be made for larger groups.

If you are diving with a group of 6 to 8 divers, a boat with a Divemaster can be made available to you to fit your schedule. All dives are drift dives over stunning coral reefs. Typically currents are not strong and we have abundant reefs to enjoy at a slow pace.

Water temperature averages 82°F. Visibility ranges from 50′ to 150′ depending on the weather.

The Divemaster selects the specific site based on ocean conditions and individual diver requests. So, don’t forget to request your favorite. Once you have completed your check-in, which includes verification of your certification card and a brief orientation in the dive shop, you are ready to go.

The dive procedure begins at our staging area in front of the dive shop where you assemble and check your equipment. A Divemaster is always at hand to assist you if needed. We allow a maximum of 8 divers per boat and normally the average dive group is six to eight divers per trip. Since the majority of our dive sites are within a 10-minute boat ride, most of the dives are with a single tank however; special two-tank dives are easily arranged.

We prefer to carry the ladies tanks to the boat. Gentlemen, you are on your own unless you request special assistance for the 100 foot walk across the beach to our open style outboard-motor boats. A final dive briefing is conducted on the boat just prior to departure.

Upon return to the dive shop you will proceed to the tank rinsing area to disassemble your equipment. For your convenience and comfort, The Akumal Dive Shop provides you with hot water showers and use of our standard lockers.

Ocean Dives Include: The price of the open-water boat dive includes an 80 cubic ft. aluminum tank, weight belt / weights, and boat trip, Locker and hot shower.   See the rental equipment section if you need additional items.
